SAFARICOM PLC ROUND TABLE MEETING AT SWAHILIPOT HUB

On Friday November 6, 2020 KNCCI in partnership with Safaricom PLC had a round table meeting with the Private Sector stakeholders and chamber members at SwahiliPot Hub. The Safaricom CEO Mr. Peter Ndegwa and his team were in attendance. The agenda of the meeting was for Safaricom to get to understand how different sectors in Mombasa have been impacted by the COVID 19 Pandemic and what possible solutions can be developed to support the sustainability of the businesses post COVID-19. 

The KNCCI board was also in attendance, CEO Mr. James Kitavi, Director Hasnain Meghji and Director Godfreys Samora who was the Moderator and delivered the opening speech on behalf of KNCCI Chairman Mr. Mustafa Ramadhan. In the speech, Mr. Mustafa highlighted that Kenya is now leading in the number of Mobile payment users thanks to M-Pesa which is now incorporated in most of the businesses across the region. He also highlighted the convenience of using M-Pesa especially during this COVID-19 pandemic and congratulated Safaricom on their 20 years of excellence.

Some members from the Tea exporters, Tourism industry, clearing and Forwarding and the Insurance sectors were also invited to speak on behalf of their sectors and state the challenges that they are facing and how they think Safaricom can provide solutions. Most of the requests that stood out included the reduction of Safaricom charges for the paybill systems, improvement of internet and network connectivity at a subsidized rate, training of Social Media Marketing, introduction of cloud storage and paperless systems and funding for special projects especially for the youth and startups. These requests were later on taken into consideration by the Safaricom CEO in his address and he sensitized the objective of Safaricom to not only be a communications company but a technology company that aims to work with all categories of businesses to provide solutions for improvement. He also mentioned the various digitization projects and foundations that will be put in place for the business community and how the team will be working with the chamber to deliver.
