Today the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mombasa County held a meeting with the Rural Focus Ltd at the Chamber office. Rural Focus Ltd. is an engineering consultancy based in Nanyuki that has been engaged by The Nature Conservancy to undertake an assessment to determine the viability of establishing a Water Fund for Mombasa.

A water fund is generally a pool of technical capacity and resources which conducts activities aimed at improving and restoring a river catchment’s ability to provide environmental services

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has successfully implemented a similar model for the upper reaches of the Tana River, namely the Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund. This fund, through its partners including Pentair, CocaCola, Nairobi Water  to mention a few, has conducted a number of catchment rehabilitation activities for the Tana River catchment, and has seen a marked improvement in water quality and quantity. TNC is keen to replicate this model for Mombasa and this formed the basis of today’s meeting with KNCCI

Rural Focus Ltd would like to identify stakeholders who can partner in this project through provision of funds, expertise and infrastructure development at the water catchment areas in order to increase the quantity of water supplied to consumers and also decrease cost of supply.
