THE GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS INDEX SENSITIZATION FORUM

KNCCI Mombasa County participated in the Executive Opinion Survey (EOS) for the Global competitiveness report sensitization workshop hosted by Kenya Investment Authority in partnership with the National productivity and competitiveness center.

In preparation for the EOS 2019, the Kenya Investment Authority (under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives) and the National Productivity and Competitiveness Centre (under the Ministry of Labour and social protection) sensitized stakeholders on the GCI, its importance, and how to participate in the online survey.

The Global Competitiveness Report 2019 will assess the competitiveness landscape of approximately 140 economies, providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity. As a growing body of empirical literature shows, differences in productivity are the main determinants of cross-country prosperity levels. The GCI remains the most comprehensive assessment of national competitiveness worldwide.

For more than 3 decades, the global competitiveness reports series of the world economic forum has been providing the world’s most respected assessment of national competitiveness. Competitiveness is defined as the set of institutions, policies and factors that determine a country’s level of productivity. The level of productivity, in turn, sets the level of prosperity that can be reached by an economy.

The Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi, together with the Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest) and the National Productivity & Competitiveness Centre (NPCC) invited the business community you to take part in the Executive Opinion Survey 2019 to assess the level of competitiveness of Kenya in an international comparison. 

This annual survey is a major component of the World Economic Forum’s Global Economic Competitiveness report it provides the key ingredient that turns the report into a representative annual measure of a nation’s economic environment.

The business community’s participation will provide critical information to assess business competitiveness in Kenya that will assist in improving the business environment.

 

 

BUSINESS COMMUNITY MEETING ON VIOLENT EXTREMISM HELD ON 25TH FEBRUARY 2018

The office of the County Commissioner in Mombasa, in collaboration with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mombasa held the first Business Community sensitization  forum on violent extremism at Castle Royal Hotel.  The forum majorly focused on violent extremism, security of businesses, anti-terror threats, search and rescue. The forum was graced by the Regional Coordinator and the County Commissioner, Mr. Evans Achoki.

THE 1ST WORKSHOP ON CROSS-BORDER TRADE BETWEEN JUBALAND & MOMBASA HELD ON 22ND OCTOBER 2018

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), Mombasa Chapter in partnership with Jubaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) held the first cross-border trade workshop with business people and stakeholders with the main objective being to establish trade links between Kenyan and Federal state of Jubaland. The workshop was graced by the Jubaland Minister of Fisheries, Jubaland Chamber of Commerce  officials as well as other stakeholders engaged in fishing and exploration of marine resources. The key areas of  discussion were on access to markets, standards and standardization of fish from Jubaland and modes of transport that would reduce the cost of goods transportation between the Kenya and Jubaland. It was agreed that a joint committee will be formed and tasked to escalate conclusions drawn from the workshop to the Kenyan Ministry of Trade at the National level.

   

 

MOMBASA WATER FUND PRE-FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENT MEETING

Today the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mombasa County held a meeting with the Rural Focus Ltd at the Chamber office. Rural Focus Ltd. is an engineering consultancy based in Nanyuki that has been engaged by The Nature Conservancy to undertake an assessment to determine the viability of establishing a Water Fund for Mombasa.

 A water fund is generally a pool of technical capacity and resources which conducts activities aimed at improving and restoring a river catchment’s ability to provide environmental services

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has successfully implemented a similar model for the upper reaches of the Tana River, namely the Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund. This fund, through its partners including Pentair, CocaCola, Nairobi Water  to mention a few, has conducted a number of catchment rehabilitation activities for the Tana River catchment, and has seen a marked improvement in water quality and quantity. TNC is keen to replicate this model for Mombasa and this formed the basis of today’s meeting with KNCCI

Rural Focus Ltd would like to identify stakeholders who can partner in this project through provision of funds, expertise and infrastructure development at the water catchment areas in order to increase the quantity of water supplied to consumers and also decrease cost of supply.

KNCCI SUPPORTS ECONOMIC COOPERATION WITH IRAN.

Today the commercial counselor of the Islamic republic of Iran Mr. Deillan Morteza  met with the Chairlady of KNCCI Madam, Rukia Rashid and Director, Mr.Dominc Mureithi to discuss the role the chamber can play in strengthening the corporation between Kenya and Iran .  KNCCI through the IMPEX Club is targeting Iran as one of the major buyers of its tea and has have since been promoting the commodity to this market. Iran normally gets the bulk of its tea from India and Sri-Lanka with Kenya supplying about 20 million kilograms of the 120 million kilos that Tehran imports annually.

KNCCI will agreed to mobilize a delegation from Mombasa to attend the 3rd edition of Exports Capabilities Exhibition of Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran Expo 2018) will be held in December, 2018 at Tehran’s Shahr-e-Aftab International Fairground.The exhibition, which is Iran’s major exports event, is aimed at luring foreign investments into the country besides facilitating exports of Iranian goods.About 800 foreign businessmen are invited to the event to set the proper ground for Iranian companies to present their capabilities and latest industrial achievements to their foreign counterparts.

MANGO VALUE CHAIN MEETING HELD IN MOMBASA

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with the Stockholm Environment Institute held a value addition meeting on mangoes produced and processed in both Mombasa and Kwale Counties. The main aim of the project is to achieve sustainable development by engaging in the transition towards an inclusive green economy which generates growth, creates jobs and reduces poverty. The mango value addition project will focus on building  awareness for the MSME’s to adopt Sustainable Consumption and Production practices (SCPs) and related benefits, training on SCPs and building of managerial capacities, facilitating funding opportunities and disseminating SCPs and project results across the agribusiness sector. The meeting was attended by producers and processors from both counties.KNCCI will facilitate the training of farmers to ensure they plant the right varieties which fetch better prices in foreign markets.

 

 

 

6th Edition of the Mombasa Business Awards

The 6th Edition of the Mombasa Business Awards will be held on 14th December 2018 at the Wild Waters in Mombasa.

The Mombasa Business Awards is the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry flagship awards programme that recognizes and rewards excellence across all sectors of Business in Mombasa.

Since 2013, the Mombasa Business Awards has become the premier event of the year, recognizing the achievements and contributions of business leaders in Mombasa County. This evening brings together Mombasa business leaders, stakeholders and media for a celebration of excellence in business.

Twenty awards will be presented and award winners will be announced on 14th December, 2018 at the Mombasa Business Awards Gala Dinner. An independent judging panel comprised of local businesspersons will complete judging of the finalists in each award category. The Mombasa business awards has a select number of awards to truly honor and recognize outstanding contributions made by businessmen and institutions in the county. The Awards honors leadership, service, knowledge and the effort of promoting a good brand name, image and reputation among the business fraternity. 

The Awards main aim is to demonstrate the association’s commitment in setting standards of excellence within the Mombasa business community.

 

 

KNCCI,Mombasa and Jubaland Chamber Open A New Charter of Cooperation

KNCCI Mombasa chapter and the Jubaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry opened a new charter of cooperation by announcing plans to jointly host a business networking forum in Mombasa on 25th October 2018. The main agenda of the forum will be to link Kenyan and Jubaland businessmen through a chamber platform where they can discuss business opportunities in the blue economy which include finishing and mining. The cost of transporting cargo from Mombasa port to Mogadishu will  also be on the agenda.

This idea came up during a meeting held on 19th September 2018 at the chamber office in Mombasa when the Jubaland state, Minister of fisheries and marine resources paid KNCCI a courtesy call accompanied by the CEO of the Jubaland Chamber of Commerce Mr.Abdiweli Haji. Also present during the meeting was the Mombasa County Government CEC in charge of Trade Hon. Fawz Rashid,  KNCCI Mombasa Chair lady, Rukia Rashid, Vice chairman Musfata Ramadhan and Director Said Zubedi.

This planned forum will presents our members with an opportunity  to explore the possibility of exporting their products into Jubaland state.
