SAFARICOM PLC ROUND TABLE MEETING AT SWAHILIPOT HUB

On Friday November 6, 2020 KNCCI in partnership with Safaricom PLC had a round table meeting with the Private Sector stakeholders and chamber members at SwahiliPot Hub. The Safaricom CEO Mr. Peter Ndegwa and his team were in attendance. The agenda of the meeting was for Safaricom to get to understand how different sectors in Mombasa have been impacted by the COVID 19 Pandemic and what possible solutions can be developed to support the sustainability of the businesses post COVID-19. 

The KNCCI board was also in attendance, CEO Mr. James Kitavi, Director Hasnain Meghji and Director Godfreys Samora who was the Moderator and delivered the opening speech on behalf of KNCCI Chairman Mr. Mustafa Ramadhan. In the speech, Mr. Mustafa highlighted that Kenya is now leading in the number of Mobile payment users thanks to M-Pesa which is now incorporated in most of the businesses across the region. He also highlighted the convenience of using M-Pesa especially during this COVID-19 pandemic and congratulated Safaricom on their 20 years of excellence.

Some members from the Tea exporters, Tourism industry, clearing and Forwarding and the Insurance sectors were also invited to speak on behalf of their sectors and state the challenges that they are facing and how they think Safaricom can provide solutions. Most of the requests that stood out included the reduction of Safaricom charges for the paybill systems, improvement of internet and network connectivity at a subsidized rate, training of Social Media Marketing, introduction of cloud storage and paperless systems and funding for special projects especially for the youth and startups. These requests were later on taken into consideration by the Safaricom CEO in his address and he sensitized the objective of Safaricom to not only be a communications company but a technology company that aims to work with all categories of businesses to provide solutions for improvement. He also mentioned the various digitization projects and foundations that will be put in place for the business community and how the team will be working with the chamber to deliver.

             

     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kenya National Chamber Signs an MOU with Global Exhibition Inc.

Today the Chamber hosted Global Exhibitions Incorporated (GEX) County Director Mr. Edwin Masingo  and the Mombasa County Government Chief officer, Trade and Tourism and Investment Ms. Asha Abdi for an MOU signing ceremony between the KNCCI  and  GEX , an organisation that intends to launch their premiere international business platform and event coined Mombasa Import and  Export Fair and Conference will  be held on 16th to 21st November at the Pride Inn Paradise Hotel Mombasa, it will be the biggest International Hybrid Exhibition and Conference in East Africa.

The Import and Export Fair and Conference is a joint initiative between the department of Trade Mombasa and Global Exhibitions Inc.

The event targets the Mombasa business community and other business across the country businesses will also be able to network with potential international buyers and also there will be creation of joint ventures with  international exhibitors.

Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Equity sign Memorandum of Understanding to offer 200 billion to Kenyan businesses.


The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry(KNCCI) and Equity have signed an MoU that has seen Equity Set aside ksh 200 billion for KNCCI members to access as part of the post COVID-19 financial support for businesses.
The partnership will see the two institutions provide a financial and training framework to a potential 3 million enterprises hence increasing their financial inclusion, access to credit and capacity building.
Under the agreement both parties will undertake joint activities to empower businesses financially and build their capacity, support through financial inclusion & business operation development programmes for our Members, training and capacity building on business management to be carried out to our members countrywide, develop monitoring and evaluation tools.
Speaking during the signing ceremony KNCCI President Richard Ngatia, highlighted a key priority of the partnership being to jointly work together to support the development of financial products that will address the needs of our members and those of Kenyan businesses
Equity Bank Chief Commercial Officer Polycarp Igathe said the bank’s priority was to help small business in surviving the financial crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and to help them create more jobs and wealth for the country.

SECURITY TEAM MEETING WITH THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the National Government through the office of the County Commissioner to help improve the security and welfare issues around the county.

On Wednesday September 23rd, the chamber hosted the Mombasa County Commissioner Mr. Gilbert Kitiyo, to chair a meeting that was attended by the KNCCI Chairman Mr. Mustafa Ramadhan, Vice Chairlady Ms. Jacqueline Waihenya and the board of directors. The discussions revolved around the various projects that the National Government has implemented to improve the pandemic situation including the Kazi Mtaani project to support the youth and the distri  bution of 1,000 Shillings per week to the vulnerable to sustain them.

Security Issues that were affecting business owners and the residents of the county for example the displacement of informal traders in Marikiti and the harassment of business owners by the police were also discussed and the commitment to look into them and provide long lasting solutions was made.

With this Partnership, KNCCI as part of the Private Sector will be able to support the works of the government to make Mombasa County a peaceful and serine place to be.

COVID – 19 COUNTY RESPONSE COMMITTEE MEETING

The Mombasa County Government held a COVID- 19  follow up Committee meeting at the Governor’s  office on 17th March 2020 , to review a report on County preparedness measures put in place.

The MGC has partnered with different stakeholders both in the public and private sectors to put in place measures that will safeguard it’s community.

KNCCI commits towards supporting County efforts in fighting the spread of the pandemic.

KRA FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION

 

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mombasa chapter in partnership with the Kenya Revenue Authority organized a Focus Group Discussion meeting at the KRA officer earlier today with the main topics of discussion being;policies, automation of KRA services, complexity or simplicity of preparation of information and records for tax purposes, customs, importation and exportation process, tax forms, filing, payment and legal tax complexity/simplicity. The members presented their grievances and challenges to the KRA research officials and suggestions were made in regards to the policies that are currently in place. The KRA officials promised to present a complete report on the issues raised for further action and improvement.

HEAD OF TRADE OFFICE IN KENYA – EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA VISITS KNCCI

In July 2018, Tunisia became a member of Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) after the northern Africa nation was ruled to meet the admission requirements.

Tunisia has a comparative advantage in construction and public works, electrical materials, food industry, pharmaceuticals and green economy and technologies.

As the countries foster relations, Kenya is looking to grow business in sectors and sub-sectors including tourism, maritime and fish processing, textiles, leather, agro-processing, oil, mining and gas, iron and steel.

Currently, the average balance of trade is in Tunisia’s favour. In 2017, exports to Tunisia were Sh29.27 million and while imports were valued at Sh63.47 million.

Today KNCCI Mombasa Chairman Mustafa Ramadhan met with the head of the Tunisian trade office in Kenya Mr. Slim Yahia and agreed that the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and industry in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Tunisia in Nairobi will host a Tunisia – Kenya business forum in Mombasa on 30th March 2020 at the Sarova Whitesands hotel.

In a Kenya-Tunisia Business Forum will set up trade linkages between that can harness on the northern country to grow trade volumes as it forms a gateway to the European market with a population of 400 million.

 

SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE INVESTMENT PROMOTION FORUM HELD AT SUN AFRICA HOTEL, MOMBASA

Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) is the statutory body established in 2015 through an Act of Parliament. The main objective of SEZA is to provide services for establishment, promotion and facilitation of Special economic zones development in Kenya. SEZA, with support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held the first Special Economic Zone Investment Promotion Forum at Sun Africa Hotel Mombasa.

The forum was graced by SEZ officials, SEZ Chief Executive Officer Dr. Meshack Kimeu, a representative from the Ministry of Industry, The Mombasa County Secretary Mr. Dennis Maghanga, a few  Mombasa County Executive Committee Members, Chamber Mombasa Chapter Chairman, Mr. Mustafa Ramadhan,  Ethiopian experts and Chief Representative, JICA Kenya office Mr. Katsutoshi Komori. The forum main objectives were; to discuss the SEZ development program and progress, investment opportunities in Mombasa County, Overview of SEZ development from International experiences, determinants of investors for SEZs, case studies of SEZs’ in Asian countries and success factors for SEZ development from the experience of Industrial Park Development in Ethiopia.

ABSA BUSINESS FORUM HELD AT SAROVA WHITESANDS, MOMBASA.


Barclays Bank of Kenya has officially re-branded to ABSA Bank Plc following regulatory and shareholder agreement. The bank has been granted asset management license by CBK.

The official launch in Mombasa took place on Wed 26th 2020,at Fort Jesus followed by a Business Forum on Friday 28th at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort. The forum was attended by the Mombasa business community and KNCCI directors.


ABSA has come up with various enterprise development initiatives which contribute towards promoting a thriving SME sector that enable social and economic development of the Country. ABSA is now growing the mass market way through introduction of new products friendly to small businesses and households alike. Aping the model of several banks which discovered earlier that the numbers are indeed in the masses.


ABSA is opening possibilities through wezesha biashara trade finance by offering unsecured loans of up to 10 million and LPO financing of up to 12 million.

KNCCI – SWAHILIPOT HUB COURTESY CALL

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Board of Directors lead by the Chairman Mr. Mustafa Ramadhan paid a courtesy visit to Swahili pot hub on Tuesday 25th . The purpose of the visit was to understand more about Swahili hub and identify possible areas of collaboration.

Swahilipot hub is a community space that focuses on the youth majorly around technology and arts with the aim of identifying talent, nurturing and advancing it to empower youth. Swahilipot works with young innovators to develop success from their ideas and initiatives through availing necessary resources that aid in capacity building

To achieve its goals Swahili pot has partnered with organizations such as Seacom, Cisco, National Museums of Kenya and the ICT authority. Each of the member partners bring in their expertise from their relevant fields to ensure that Mombasa youth innovate creatively around arts and technology to come up with viable and sustainable solutions.

Swahili pot offers different programs in both art and technology that taps talent, encourage innovation and engage youth to become self-reliant and better citizens.

The meeting demystified swahilipot hub and KNCCI committed to support swahilipot’s initiatives and also help identify gaps within the market environment that can be filled through creation of  innovative products.
